English: Hiv, human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that can be transmitted through unprotected sex where mucous membranes and body fluids are involved. In Sweden, the current treatment of hiv is so effective that it lowers the virus levels, and the risk of infection to practically zero. People with modern hiv treatment can live a long life and even give birth without transmitting the infection to someone else.
Without treatment, hiv sooner or later leads to other diseases. Hiv impairs the immune system which can lead to tumours or severe infections. This condition is called Aids.
